What is a Timing Belt?

The timing belt on your vehicle’s engine is responsible for keeping the motions of the crankshaft and camshaft synchronized. It works by turning the sprockets of both shafts with teeth on the belt that align with those on the sprockets. It allows the valves to open and close when they should. The camshaft’s intake valve lets fuel and air into the cylinder. When the mixture has been condensed and ignited, its gases are released through the exhaust valve.

Prior to the 1980s, timing chains were used to function in the same way. Belts are a quieter and more fuel-efficient option, but they do require maintenance. It’s important to adhere to the manufacturer’s guidelines on a replacement. A good rule of thumb is every 60,000. You want to change the belt before it breaks to prevent an expensive repair. If the belt breaks while you’re driving, you could find that the valves are stuck.

There are some tell-tale signs that the timing belt is in need of service. One is low compression, and another is backfiring. When you’re in the local Albuquerque, NM area, be sure to bring your vehicle in to the service center at Garcia Honda. We’ll be happy help answer your questions!
